A stocky, blunt-headed grey dolphin whose body becomes heavily scarred and almost white with age from squid bites and social raking. It occurs as a deep-water species in the Egyptian Red Sea and the Mediterranean, with stranding and sighting records off Egypt.
This is a protected or non-target species — please don't fish for it. If it's accidentally hooked, release it quickly and unharmed.
Eating & safety
Observe only from a distance; this is a deep-diving offshore species rarely seen close to shore.
Best conditions: Deep offshore water in calm conditions where pods surface between dives
Older Risso's dolphins look almost white because their grey skin accumulates a lifetime of pale scars from squid and pod-mates.
