Surface strikes so violent they'll stop your heart

Popping (surface lure fishing) is the most adrenaline-fueled technique in saltwater fishing. Large cup-faced poppers and stickbaits are worked on the surface to mimic struggling prey, triggering violent explosive strikes from Giant Trevally and other apex predators. The Red Sea's outer reefs and channels are world-class popping destinations.

How it works

A large surface popper or stickbait is cast to the target zone, then worked back with aggressive rod sweeps that make the lure splash, gurgle, and dart across the surface. The commotion draws predators from depth. The strike is almost always visible โ€” an eruption of white water and silver.

Step by step

  1. 1Identify surface activity โ€” birds diving, baitfish busting, current rips
  2. 2Cast beyond the activity zone, not into it โ€” let the lure land quietly
  3. 3Start working the popper with sharp, sweeping rod strokes
  4. 4Vary your cadence โ€” try fast then pause, or slow steady pops
  5. 5On a stickbait, use a walk-the-dog action with a rhythmic side-to-side dart
  6. 6Keep tension during the pause โ€” strikes often come when the lure sits still
  7. 7When a fish hits: WAIT a beat, then set the hook with a sweep โ€” don't jerk immediately

Pro tips

  • โ†’GT don't always commit on the first swipe โ€” keep working the lure, they come back
  • โ†’Early morning and late afternoon are peak surface feeding times
  • โ†’Incoming tide pushing water over a reef edge concentrates bait and predators
  • โ†’Use a wind-on leader with a solid snap โ€” you'll be retying under pressure otherwise
  • โ†’Wear sun protection โ€” popping sessions often run 6+ hours under full sun
